How to get to Jökulsárlón along the South Coast
How to get to Jökulsárlón depends on whether you drive, use the regional bus or join an excursion from Reykjavík. The lagoon and Fellsfjara lie on opposite sides of Ring Road 1. From Reykjavík, about 5.5 hours by car is a planning estimate for good road conditions, before adding sightseeing stops. Treat winter conditions and the onward journey as part of the decision.
First choose between a return excursion and a staged route with an overnight stay. The Reykjavík day-trip guide covers excursion routes, while overnight bases helps with a journey spread over several days. A lagoon activity can have its own meeting point, so organise the road journey separately from any time on the water.

Taxi and transfer from Keflavík Airport (KEF)
Keep the airport transfer separate from the journey to the lagoon. The airport coach journey from KEF to Reykjavík takes about 45 minutes. That time describes the capital-bound airport leg, rather than a transfer to Jökulsárlón. Keflavík International Airport is also a different airport from Reykjavík Airport, whose code is RKV.
For a taxi or private transfer, request a quote for the exact destination and pickup arrangements you need. If joining a Reykjavík excursion, leave a suitable margin between the flight, transfer and tour departure. Public airport bus 55 serves the capital area, but some journeys end in Hafnarfjörður rather than continuing to BSÍ; match the actual service to your onward departure.

Travel to the lagoon with a guide from Reykjavík
This bus excursion departs from BSÍ in Reykjavík and includes a guide and onboard Wi-Fi. It is a sightseeing day trip; the lagoon boat ride and food are extra, and the airport journey is separate.
Car hire and parking
Car hire is available at Keflavík Airport (KEF). Arrange collection around your flight and plan the South Coast itinerary with stops, accommodation and the return of the vehicle in mind. Read the hire conditions for the vehicle you select, including the arrangements for charges billed to the vehicle holder. A self-drive plan should leave room for changes when weather or roads affect the day.
Find a rental car at Keflavík Airport (KEF) on Economybookings.
Parking fees and payment
As checked on 5 November 2026, the national park parking fee is 1,110 ISK for a car registered with up to 5 seats. Parka web payment adds an 89 ISK transaction charge. The vehicle class is based on registered seats, rather than how many passengers are travelling that day. This is a parking charge, not an admission ticket for each person.
Jökulsárlón and both Fellsfjara car parks share one payment zone. Payment is valid until midnight on the same calendar day, with repeat entry and exit possible during that period. It is not a rolling period from your arrival time. Enter the correct registration when paying, and distinguish the parking payment from any road toll on your route.
The national park also lists parking payment machines. Holders of a disability parking card can apply for an exemption by registering the vehicle in advance and waiting for confirmation. Displaying the card alone is not the registration procedure. Toilets are available at Jökulsárlón; plan their use around the facilities available when you visit rather than assuming overnight access.
Hornafjörður road toll
The new Hornafjörður section has been tolled since 1 September 2026. Include this cost if your journey uses that section, for example when approaching through that part of the eastern route. The road authority's notice of 1 October 2026 gives a single-passage charge of 1,500 ISK for vehicles under 3.5 tonnes. The road toll and lagoon parking are separate payments.
Regional bus 52
The timetable valid from 1 March 2026 lists route 52 between Mjódd and Höfn with a Jökulsárlón stop. Use that as dated timetable information and consult the service for your travel date before fixing accommodation or an activity. Operating days and the return journey matter as much as finding the lagoon's name among the stops.
Regional bus tickets can be paid by debit or credit card, or cash, on board. The regular regional service does not take advance reservations. Keep it distinct from the organised excursion departing BSÍ: those are different journeys, departure points and booking arrangements. For wider comparisons see lagoon tours.
Winter driving and national park protection
Consult road.is for roads, vedur.is for weather and SafeTravel.is for travel safety shortly before setting off. Allow daylight and time reserves; snow and ice lengthen braking distances, and four-wheel drive does not prevent sliding. Adjust the journey to conditions instead of treating a summer driving estimate as a fixed arrival time.
Stay on designated roads and marked paths. To reach Fellsfjara on foot, use the path under the bridge rather than walking over the road bridge. Keep away from surf and ice blocks in the water. At the lagoon, never step onto floating ice. These choices matter after the drive just as much as careful planning before departure.

How long does the parking payment last?
Until midnight on the payment calendar day, covering Jökulsárlón and both Fellsfjara car parks within the shared zone.
Is the boat included with the BSÍ excursion?
The excursion includes bus travel, a guide and Wi-Fi. A lagoon boat ride and food are excluded; compare boat-ticket options if time on the water is part of your plan.
